TIFTON — Local business owner and Tifton resident, Tony McBrayer, announced Tuesday he is running for the open State House District 153 seat being vacated by Austin Scott, who has announced his bid for governor in 2010. McBrayer will be running as a Republican.
The House district includes most of Tift County and all of Turner County.
McBrayer, in a press release, stated “I am excited to announce my candidacy for State House and I look forward to earning the trust and support of my neighbors in this district. I thank Rep. Scott for his 14 years of service to our area, and I will strive to continue this tradition of dedicated public service.”
McBrayer wrote he is “running to ensure that conservative Christian leadership has a strong voice in Atlanta. As your next state representative, I will stand strong for the values in which we believe. I will stand strong in support of reforming the property tax system that drives our families and farmers off their land, lower taxes, cutting wasteful spending, attracting jobs, state rights and our conservative South Georgia values.”
In 1989, McBrayer started and has operated TMM Enterprises, Inc., a wholesale specialty grocery distributor. He is a member of the Georgia Food Industry Association, and is a recipient of numerous awards in his field. Prior to starting TMM Enterprises, he was a local manager of Winn Dixie grocery stores in Tifton, Douglas and McRae.
McBrayer is a certified financial coach through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University organization. In the last three years, he has facilitated classes at three different churches in the area, with two more churches scheduled for 2010. The classes teach families to live within their means, which McBrayer said is his goal for state government.
McBrayer is also an active member of the Tiftarea Tea Party Patriots, “working to fight Barack Obama’s liberal agenda in D.C.,” the press release states. He currently serves on the Tift County Planning and Zoning Board of Appeals. He is also a graduate of Leadership Tifton and past-president of Tifton Gideons.
McBrayer began working on his uncle’s farm when he was 8, and graduated from Tift County High School, ABAC and Valdosta State College with degrees in business administration and accounting. He and his wife, Diane, have been married for 25 years and the couple has two sons, Ryan and Shane. The family are active members of Pineview Holiness Baptist Church, where McBrayer teaches an adult Sunday School class, serves as director of the choir and as treasurer of the church.
