Reaching new heights: C of I (College of Idaho) student Matt Fultz a climbing star

(Article provided by Stella Frances "Frankie" McBrayer Ausbun, the daughter of the late James Earl McBrayer of Morehead, KY. Matt is her grandson - the son of her second daughter - Connie - who died in an auto accident in 1994.)

"A professional athlete resides on The College of Idaho campus, and he's one of the best in the world at his sport.

"Were Matt Fultz a football player, autograph requests might make his college life difficult. But the C of I sophomore is a rock climber, which means his love for the sport exceeds any mainstream fame and fortune he receives from it.

"Not that you'll hear him complain about it.

"'What I love about climbing is the physical problem solving.' Fultz said. 'Here you have this challenge in front of you, and you have to solve it in your mind and then try to execute your solution with your body. I've always enjoyed puzzles like that. It feels so awesome when you figure it out and reach the top.'

"Famous or not, Fultz is one of the best young climbers in the nation. He has been competing across the country since his early teens, and he became the first person from Idaho--and the entire Big Sky region--to win USA Climbing Junior Nationals in 2004. Fultz put climbing on the back burner for a couple of years while he starred in football and track at nearby Columbia High School in Nampa, but his dedication to the sport has reached new heights since he enrolled at C of I. He remains undefeated in Idaho competition and qualified for his first World Cup event last year by finishing siixth at a Professional Bouldering Series national event in Salt Lake City. He chose not to attend the World Cup, but plans to go this year if he qualifies again.

"'It's been really exciting getting back into climbing.' Fultz said. 'If you quality for World Cup, you get to compete in Europe, so I'm definitely interested in that. But I also enjoy climbing outside just for fun here in Idaho.'

"Fultz, an exercise science major, would like to attend graduate school and become a physical trainer or therapist. He also is excited that rock climbing will become an Olymopic sport in 2020, though he acknowledged he 'might be too old by then.' . . . .
He encourages anyone interested in climbing to contact him via email at
matthew.fultz@collegeofidaho.edu "

'Even in a fringe sport, Fultz is too good to avoid the limelight completely. He is being featured this month by The Real Winning Edge, a television program about young athletes overcoming obstacles and making
life decisions. The episode featuring Fultz will air nationally on FOX . Fultz's segment will focus on climbing as well as dealing with peer pressure."

I've been told that he can be seen climbing if you google Rock Climber 6. I haven't tried it. (Frankie)

McBrayer School - Morehead, KY, makes the news!

James Earl McBrayer and his family donated the land in Morehead, KY for a new school and because of his donation the local school board named the building in his honor. Now that group of students have made their community proud by winning a national award/contest. The following article appeared in The Morehead (KY) News (online edition) on March 4, 2011. Thanks to Jim and Dorcas McBrayer for sharing this with us.

Missing Relative Sought

ATTENTION - ATTENTION - ATTENTION

SPECIAL NOTICE

We need your help!!!!

I was contacted (6/2/2011) by the U.S. Army Casualty Office for help in locating relatives of a McBrayer who was listed as "Missing in Action" (1950) during the Korean War and later (1953) declared as "Killed in Action". His body was never recovered.

The U.S. Army Casualty Office is looking for ANYONE who is a relative of Lee Rayford McBrayer, born in 1920 in North Carolina. They are asking for a mouth swab from a living relative so a positive ID can be made on any remains returned.

The story is this: Lee Rayford McBrayer, born about 1920 in New York (place of birth was on his military records, but research prooved North Carolina), was a Corporal in Company C, 1/24 Regiment, 25th Infantry Division when an overwhelming number of Chinese Communists crossed the Yalu River and pushed his unit on a withdrawl to the south bank of the Chongchon River on November 30, 1950. Lee Rayford was reported missing on November 28. He was later listed as "Killed in Action" in 1953. His remains were never returned.

The North Korean govenrment has recently allowed the recovery of many of the remains of U.S. soldiers who had fallen in battle in that country. Those remains are now being returned to America for identification. Of those about 200 have already been identified, but many others still are awaiting the process. This is being done through a DNA comparison process. The DNA comes from relatives of these soldiers.

The official death notification was sent to his mother in Charlotte, NC. She was listed as ERA LAWRENCE. Also found in the records was the name of an aunt ESSIE MCBRAYER. If ANYONE knows of any relative of this individual, PLEASE, contact me immediately at carl5@cox.net or carlmcbrayer@yahoo.com.

Let's help in identifying Lee's remains so he can receive a proper military burial for a family hero. His family deserves to know that he is finally home.

UPDATE:

We now know that Lee was black, born about 1921 in North Carolina. His mother married a Mr. Lawrence sometime after 1930 and lived in Charlotte, NC. He also had an aunt - Essie McBrayer, a widow of Hoyle McBrayer. She was still living in 1968, but it isn't known if she had children or if Era McBrayer Lawrence had other children. We do know they lived in Charlotte, NC, though.

UPDATE - JUNE 4, 2011

After an exhaustive search it has been determined that Lee Rayford McBrayer had no known siblings - he was an only child. Even though his mother remarried there were no children of record to this marriage. It is unfortunate that a relative cannot be located that could provide a DNA to identify Lee's remains. IF ANYONE KNOWS OR DISCOVERS ANY LIVING RELATIVE OF THIS PERSON, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! This is one of those times when the pieces of the puzzle fall together, but they don't produce a full picture. Thanks to all for your help, comments, and interest - especially to Christie __________, who was critical in her assistance with research.
