Newsletter Archives

This page contains .pdf copies of In Defiance, the family newsletter, beginning with the first issue on June 1, 1979 and continuing through the latest issue in 2011.  They are listed by years and then by issue. Click on the issue of your choice to read. You will need Adobe Reader to view the newsletter. If you do not have the reader installed on your computer you can go to http://www.adobe.com to download and install a free copy.

Back in the formative years of In Defiance we didn't have computers. We were still using typewriters and, if we were lucky to afford it, we could occasionally use a copy machine - although of very poor quality at that time. The fastest way to print multiply documents was the old-fashioned mimeograph. How many of you remember those or have even heard of them.

Mimeograph machines were the state of the art affairs in those years. They were large, required stencils for printing, were very nasty (ink), and consumed a great amount of time. I would sit at a typewrite and type/cut the mimeo stencil - one for each page of the newsletter - then load it into the machine, load it with ink and paper and begin cranking. Yes it was also hand operated. After the appropriate number, with a few extra, of pages run, it was off to cut another stencil. Then it was back to the machine, reload the paper to print the other side, hoping all the time that nothing would go wrong and I would have to begin all over. This continued until all the pages were run.

Then came the fun of collating the pages - all by hand. Pat and I would sometimes spend hours at this task - then staple, address, and mail. Most times this was a several-day affair.

These are the first year for ID - 1979 - and you can see the poor quality of the print compared to todays 'computer-generated' documents, but it was our newsletter - our first method of communicating with the mass of cousins out there. The first few years were all run on the mimeograph.

What a job! ... But what memories this brings back. I hope you will enjoy reading these.

Those issues that are underlined have been loaded and are ready to read. Those without lines beneath I do not have. They have been lost in the confusion of lots of paperwork and are probably stored within some 9-10 boxes of old papers. It would take months to locate - even if they are there. So.... If you would happen to have a copy I could borrow and scan, I and the rest of the family would deeply appreciate it. I will return it/them to you. Or, if you have the means, could you scan them with Adobe, save them in .pdf format and send them to me? Your help would be greatly appreciated. I will see you get the credit for your help.

If you discover any broken links to any of the issues of ID please let me know immediately so the problem can be corrected.
