In Memoriam of William J. Downey, Sr.
October 20, 1920 - January 6, 2011
Mr. William J. Downey, Sr., 90 was born on October 20, 1920 in the old Hotel Haralson, owned by his grandfather, Mr. John Mangham. He died on January 6, 2011 following an extended illness.
He was married to the former Frances McBrayer Downey for seventy years. They were sweethearts in Bremen grade school. (She was the daughter of Frank Everett and Ruth Whitton McBrayer.)
Mr. Downey was a men’s apparel salesman for Higgins Company and Hubbard Company traveling in Kentucky and Tennessee. Upon retiring back to Bremen, he continued in sales at Bremen Trousers, owned by his son, Michael Downey and L.C. Guice, Jr.
He was a member of the local Masonic Lodge for sixty years and First Baptist Church of Bremen. A Veteran of The United States Navy serving during WWII.
In addition to his parents, Atward Downey and Annette Mangham Davenport he was also preceded in death by his youngest son, John Michael Downey.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances M. Downey of Bremen; son, William J. Downey, Jr of Bremen; sister, Jane Fatzinger of Springfield, MO; brothers, Bob Downey and Marshal Downey; grandsons, Marcus Downey and Matthew Downey; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Downey and Sidney Downey.
Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 2 pm from the Chapel of Hightower Funeral Home in Bremen with Brother Herman Parker officiating. Music will be provided by Andy Fowler.
Interment will follow in Bremen City Cemetery.
